Annie Duke: The Poker Expert

Cognitive Psychology – that was what Annie Duke had planned on getting her Master’s degree in, and earn a living doing. But something got in the way of her dreams. Or did it? Because Annie loved to play cards – it had been the main source of entertainment for her family growing up – the casino atmosphere and poker game were always a big part of her life. Although she had set her sights on becoming a professor like her father, she only managed to earn a Bachelor’s in English and Psychology before she turned to a life of professional poker and large pot wins. It seemed that casino life was what Annie truly wanted, after all.

But what does ‘after all’ mean? For many years, her brother, known to many as a true poker king, Howard Lederer, tried aimlessly to get Annie to enter the world of poker and play professionally. When he saw his attempts were in vain, he left the idea alone, until one of his trips to Las Vegas brought Annie to the casino steps. Her older brother taught her to play one of the most popular types of poker – Texas Hold’em – and she loved the game so much she came back to the casino city again and again!

Annie left her teaching and research work in grad school in order to follow her new passion – poker. ‘I was the only woman, and I started making money right away. Five days a week, I would get there in the afternoon and play a few hours. There was a 45-minute commute each way. I treated it like a job,’ says the casino poker queen. She moved to Billings, Montana in 1992 and began her pro poker career full-force. After her brother’s convincing worked, she participated in the WSOP, winning 13th place and $48,000. The next year she made it to third place. Sometimes you don’t know your true destiny and passion until someone helps you find it! And in this case, Annie’s brother helped pave the way to her life of success and casino glitz and glamour! Way to go, Annie Duke!
