British Women Line Up for Online Casino Poker
Following similar trends in the U.S., British female poker fans are breaking into the world of online casino poker. Traditionally seen as a male dominated sport, poker’s transition to the online casino has attracted thousands of female gambling fans keen to try out the game. Poker has suddenly became fashionable fun and convenient to play online, and according to a recent poll in Britain last year, record numbers of women are signing up to become online casino poker fans.
The study, commissioned by YouGov last year, revealed that in Britain, 30 to 40 percent of online casino poker players are female. The confidence female poker fans are gaining at online casino poker is paying off for land-based poker establishments too. YouGov reported that the proportion of women playing in land-based casinos is estimated to have risen from one to five percent of players. Given the demand for online casino poker, one enterprising casino located in Birmingham will play host to the first British women’s poker championship later this year.
According to Mark Ross, the director of Star City, “women’s poker championships started in America three or four years ago and we felt it was time to start them here.” Ross went on to say that many women start playing online casino poker and thus build up the skills, confidence and desire to participate in live competitions. Women who have never played in a casino before but have played with friends or at online casino sites are expected to participate in the championships.
