Turkey's Law Against Online Casino Attracts Fire
Turkey's latest legislative move against online casinos has certainly attracted a lot of criticism from many directions, including that of many legal experts. One of them, Attorney Dr. Ola Wiklund, expressed his feeling last week, as he described the new law as "the most authoritarian gaming regime in the Western World". Wiklund, Attorney at Wistrand Law Firm, Stockholm and an Associate Professor at Stockholm University, went even further, calling the law "draconian" and describing it as "a disproportionate and misguided challenge to the constitutional principles of free trade enshrined in EU law." His reactions may seem a bit severe at first, but he's not alone in this battle, as many other experts strongly oppose this law, which can seriously hurt online casinos in the area.
According to this latest Turkish law, any gaming company, including online casino, operating without authorization from the government, could face heavy fines and even imprisonment. In addition, facilitating or participating in these activities is also strictly prohibited and criminalised."The Turkish government simply wants to make a pre-emptive strike against private online casinos who offer their clients more favorable terms by way of better odds and higher return rate. Simply put, they want to eliminate the competition" says Wiklund.
But Wiklund doesn't stop there: "The Turkish State wants to increase its income from gambling, and they are trying to do it with an aggressive and expansive policy against online casinos. I have no doubt that the European Union will not accept this, and it will be a shame is this will hurt the ongoing integration process between Europe and Turkey" concludes Wiklund, hoping that the Turkish government will understand the possible repercussions of this move against online casinos.
